UPC-E compresses a 12-digit UPC-A into 8 digits by mathematically removing extra zeros in the manufacturer prefix and product code. A UPC-E barcode scanner expands the 8-digit code back into its 12-digit UPC-A equivalent when lookup happens in the database.
