Shopify's own requirements: none
Your Shopify store has no barcode requirement. You can sell anything without a UPC. Shopify's product catalog supports a barcode field, but it's optional. If you only sell on your own Shopify storefront, you don't need barcodes.
Google Shopping via Shopify
If you run Google Shopping ads through your Shopify store, Google requires a GTIN for most product categories. Without a GTIN, your products are ineligible for Shopping campaigns or receive reduced ad serving. A UPC from UPCBay satisfies Google's GTIN requirement.
Amazon sales channel from Shopify
Shopify's Amazon sales channel lets you list products on Amazon directly. When you sync a Shopify product to Amazon, Amazon's GTIN requirement still applies. You'll need a valid UPC for each product variant you want listed on Amazon.
Physical retail from Shopify
Many Shopify merchants use Shopify POS or connect their store to wholesale or retail buyers. Retail buyers — especially if they're larger chains — will want a GTIN on your products. Having one barcode per SKU prepared before you start those conversations makes the process smoother.
