eBay Barcode Requirements

eBay uses GTINs (UPC, EAN, ISBN) to catalog product listings. They're not always mandatory — but providing one improves listing visibility significantly and is required for new items in most retail categories.

When eBay requires a barcode

eBay requires a GTIN for new, branded items in most product categories. For used, vintage, handmade, or custom items, you can mark 'Does not apply' in the GTIN field. For consumer electronics, clothing, sporting goods, and most common retail categories — if you're selling something new, eBay expects a UPC or EAN.

How GTINs improve eBay search visibility

eBay uses GTINs to match your listing against its product catalog. When you provide a valid GTIN, eBay can pull product details, specs, and images automatically, and your listing appears in catalog searches for that product. Listings without GTINs in cataloged categories often rank lower in search.
