UPC Barcodes for Etsy Sellers

Etsy's barcode requirements are less strict than Amazon's, but they exist — and getting them right matters if you're also selling on other platforms or want to move into retail.

Does Etsy require a UPC barcode?

Etsy doesn't require barcodes for handmade items — that's part of the platform's appeal for makers. But if you're selling manufactured or commercial products on Etsy, you may be asked for a UPC. And if you're selling the same product on Amazon, eBay, or in any retail setting, a UPC keeps your product identity consistent across channels.

Why get a barcode even if Etsy doesn't require it?

If you sell on Etsy and are also (or planning to be) on Amazon, eBay, or in physical stores, a UPC gives your product a universal identifier. Using the same barcode across channels prevents inventory confusion, makes fulfillment easier, and is required if you ever want to move volume through a retailer or marketplace that does require barcodes.

How many codes does an Etsy seller need?

One per product variant. If you sell custom candles in three scents and two sizes, that is six codes — one per unique combination. If you have one product, you need one code.

Package recommendation

Most Etsy sellers start with 1–10 codes. The single code at $8 is fine for testing. The 10-pack at $20 covers a small catalog.
