What kind of barcode does Amazon require?
Amazon requires a GTIN for each product you list. In the US, the standard format is UPC-A (12 digits). International products often use EAN-13 (13 digits). Both work on Amazon. If you're selling a new product under your own brand, you need to provide one when you create the listing. If you're reselling an existing branded product, you use that brand's existing barcode.
Do you need to buy from GS1 specifically?
Amazon's official guidance recommends GS1, but in practice, codes from legitimate third-party providers work — provided the codes come from authentic GS1/UCC-issued company prefixes. UPCBay codes come from company prefixes originally issued by the UCC before August 2002. These are the original GTINs from the original system. They're verifiable, they pass Amazon's GTIN check, and they create real product listings.
Amazon GTIN exemption — is it an option?
Sometimes. Amazon allows GTIN exemptions for certain categories (handmade goods, some private label products in specific categories). You apply through Seller Central. If you qualify, you don't need a barcode at all for that listing. If you don't qualify, or if you want to keep the option to sell the same product across other platforms, a UPC is the cleaner solution.
How many do you need?
One per SKU. A t-shirt in three sizes is three SKUs — three codes. A single product in one configuration is one code. Buy what you have now. If you add products later, buy more.
