Do Amazon FBA sellers need a UPC barcode?
Yes, with one exception. Amazon requires a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) for every product listing unless you apply for a GTIN exemption. UPC-A codes are the standard GTIN for US products. If you're selling a product you've manufactured or sourced yourself, you need a UPC. If you're reselling an existing branded product, you use the brand's existing barcode — not a new one.
What Amazon actually accepts
Amazon accepts barcodes from legitimate third-party providers, provided the codes come from original GS1/UCC-issued prefixes. UPCBay's codes come from company prefixes issued by the UCC (the predecessor to GS1) before August 28, 2002. These are authentic GTINs — they show up in the GS1 database as issued, and they create live Amazon product listings without issues. Amazon's policy targets fake or recycled barcodes, not legitimately issued ones from the original system.
How many UPC codes does an FBA seller need?
One UPC per SKU. Each unique product variant — different size, color, material, or configuration — is a separate SKU and needs its own barcode. If you have a t-shirt in three sizes and four colors, that is twelve codes. If you are starting with one product in one variation, you need one. Buy what you need now — you can add more later without creating a new account.

Why not buy directly from GS1?
GS1 charges $250/year for a company prefix that covers up to 10 codes, plus an annual renewal fee every year you want to keep the prefix active. For someone launching a first product and testing whether it sells, that's a meaningful upfront cost plus ongoing overhead. UPCBay codes are $8 for one — one-time, no renewal, no annual fee. The codes work. The listings go live. That's usually what matters in the early stages.
When GS1 does make sense
GS1 is the right choice if you're entering large brick-and-mortar retail. Kroger, Walmart's private label program, and some Target suppliers require GS1-issued GTINs specifically — third-party codes won't pass their vendor compliance checks. If your path is Amazon-first and you're testing products, third-party is fine. If you're going into Kroger warehouses, get GS1.
Package recommendation
Most FBA sellers starting out need 1–10 codes. The 10-code bundle at $20 covers most small catalogs. If you have 20+ SKUs, the 100-code bundle at $45 brings the per-code cost under $0.50.
