Quick verdict
For 99% of Amazon sellers and e-commerce brands, standard 12-digit UPC-A is the required format. UPC-E is only used when printing on very small physical containers (such as cosmetics tubes or chewing gum packs).
Side-by-side comparison
| Feature | UPC-A | UPC-E |
|---|---|---|
| Digit length | 12 digits | 8 digits (zero-suppressed) |
| Usage | Standard retail packaging & Amazon | Small items (gum, lip balm, cosmetics) |
| Amazon acceptance | Universal GTIN support | Requires conversion to UPC-A |
| Compatibility | Supported by all POS scanners | Requires UPC-E enabled scanners |
How UPC-E zero-suppression works
UPC-E compresses a 12-digit UPC-A into 8 digits by mathematically removing extra zeros in the manufacturer prefix and product code. A UPC-E barcode scanner expands the 8-digit code back into its 12-digit UPC-A equivalent when lookup happens in the database.
